Choosing a head lice lotion? With such a variety to choose from choosing the right head lice lotion for your or your child’s treatment for head lice can be time consuming and confusing, and perhaps the best way to get the right information is to look at some of the websites that deal with head lice and have testimonials from people who have successfully used different brands or methods.
However, you are likely to find that there will be two distinct groups of people: those who prefer the insecticide lotions and shampoos prescribed by doctors, and those who opt to use natural or alternative substances for their head lice remedy.
There are arguments for both, and good reasons why you should consider such things carefully before going ahead.
The first thing to remember is that while head lice are potentially embarrassing they are not in any way dangerous; they do not pass on any diseases and head lice simply go about their daily lives with the worst you can expect being an itchy head. Yes, the thought of them feeding on our blood is gross, but there are many far nastier parasites out there. An infestation of head lice is not something that signifies poor hygiene, either, as up to 12 million children, in America alone, suffer from an infestation every year.
As the danger is nonexistent it is questionable whether using powerful insecticides to combat what is a minor problem makes sense. The three main insecticides used are Malathion, Permethrin and Lindane, and while the first two come with little controversy other than possible minor side effects such as exaggerated irritation of the scalp, the latter is a very controversial substance indeed that has been linked to serious convulsions in patients, and even to possible deaths. Some alternative for head lice lotion?

Alternative Of Head Lice Lotion

The alternative lotions for head lice are those that are made from, or utilize, natural ingredients; Tea Tree oil is very much in vogue, and ylang ylang too, and products using these in their make up – shampoos and lotions both – have been found to be as effective as a Permethrin based lotion in independent trials.
Whether you choose to opt for the medically proven insecticides and have your doctor prescribe one of the safe versions, or whether you are prone to go down the natural route and look at herbal options, the choice is, after all, your own, but many would say that trying something completely safe and without any risk is a more sensible first step, particularly as the condition itself is far from a serious one. Head lice should be treated.

In understanding the problem of head lice it is necessary to dispel a few myths and misconceptions; one is that head lice cannot fly – they are wingless creatures as evidenced by the many head lice pictures available on the internet – and perhaps more important is to understand that head lice and head lice nits are two different things.
This is vital in treatment terms as getting rid of either requires a different approach; the head lice themselves, the adult walking creatures, are relatively easy to get rid of by using either one of the many insecticide lotions or shampoos, Malathion or Permethrin for instance, available in well known brand such as Ovide, or by using a natural method or lotion, many of which are rather bizarre and somewhat questionable. Nits, however, are absolutely microscopic and may avoid being eliminated by even the strongest of insecticide treatments, meaning that while the lice have all been killed there are living, soon to hatch eggs remaining, and ready to start off a new colony in a matter of days.

Head Lice Nits Are Strongly Attached To Our Hair

One problem with head lice nits is that they are attached to our hair by what amounts to a very strong glue, and they are laid very close to the scalp making them difficult to find; wet combing the hair with a nit comb over a white sheet of paper may help to identify those that you do manage to dislodge – they will appear as tiny white specks – but this does not mean they have all been successfully removed.
A seemingly odd process may help to dislodge the nits from their strong holding, as bathing the head in vinegar has been shown to loosen the attachment to the hair, thanks to the acids present. Once done, and rinsed thoroughly, a further combing with a nit comb may result in a full clear out of all attendant nits.
As some may remain we need to keep a close eye on the patient over the next few days; nits hatch approximately one week after they are laid, and in as little as a further week the young head lice nymphs become breeding adults. This means you have a space of two weeks from the initial treatment over which close attention, and regular inspection, must be kept up in order to clear the head of any future or possible infestation. Nits are the biggest part of the problem, and the most difficult to spot, so such examinations are an integral part of any treatment regime.

Tinea capitis symptoms on the scalp may or may not actually lead to a definite tinea capitis diagnosis. It is sometimes hard to tell the source of the fungus or if it is an actual fungal infection. This is a skin disorder that affects children almost exclusively. Tinea capitis is easily and frequently mistaken for other infections. Non-fungal conditions that resemble tinea infections include impetigo, Seborrhoeic dermatitis, Psoriasis, Discoid eczema, Lichen simplex, Contact allergic dermatitis and Pityriasis rosea. Suggestions for prevention include things like keeping the area clean. Using a medicated shampoo, with ingredients like ketoconazole or selenium sulfide, may reduce the spread of infection. It may be necessary for other family members and pets to be examined and treated.

There are options that can be explored to help with diagnosis. Some are a skin lesion biopsy with microscopic examination can be done or culture or a Wood’s lamp test to confirm a fungal scalp infection. The Wood’s lamp examination can be useful in evaluating the scope of infection, identifying areas for sampling and determining treatment response when the Tinea capitis diagnosis is positive. The examination can also be useful for looking at the contacts of an infected person.

Tinea Capitis on Aminals

Most dermatophytes do not fluoresce during examination but there are exceptions to this rule. Two of those exceptions are zoophilic dermatophytes. Zoonotic means the disease can be passed from animals to humans. Cats are more likely to be infected with Tinea capitis of all animals. The skin changes in cats are very similar to those of affected people, but cats can carry the infection without exhibiting obvious signs just like infected humans.

Fungal organisms known as dermatophytes may cause scalp ringworm by infecting certain kinds of tissue found in hair, skin, and nails. It can be persistent as well as contagious. Symptoms may consist of itching, scaly, and inflamed balding areas on the scalp. The specific pattern of fungal scalp ringworm depends on the infecting organisms. Ringworm of the scalp or beard may look like dandruff with flakes of dead skin on the hair or beard.

Tinea Capitis Infection

The infection can spread gradually and cover a large area. Oral antifungal medications are required to treat the infection. It is estimated that 3-8% of the population is affected by ringworm in the United States alone. Some people can carry the infection and pass it to others in the household. In other countries, statistics show an estimated 9.6% of people are Tinea Capitis affected to varying degrees, and nearly 40% can be carriers.

Treating head lice can seem like a complex and confusing routine as there are so many different prescribed methods, but one thing always figures in whatever regime you choose, be it washing or smothering, natural or insecticide, and that is the head lice comb, a very clever and extremely cheap item that is absolutely essential when eradication an infestation of head lice.

Head Lice Comb Is Designed Closely Coupled Teeth

The head lice comb came about thanks to the very nature of the louse itself – tiny, indeed microscopic, the head lice and head lice eggs, otherwise known as nits, are immune to being removed by a standard comb as they simply pass through the gaps between the teeth. The special head lice comb is designed with very closely coupled teeth and with a longer reach than normal, as it needs to get in to the scalp where the head lice lay the nits, right at the base of the hair follicles.
The aim is to snag any living, or dead, head lice and to try and do the same with the nits, although the diminutive size of these, and the way they are attached to the hairs with very strong natural glue, means this may be more difficult than at first believed.
As the nits are firmly attached to the hairs it is believed by some that loosening them is essential, and one method of doing this is to smother the hair in vinegar for the acidic content of the liquid will dissolve the adhesive and leave the eggs free of the hair. Naturally, this makes them easier to dislodge from the scalp by way of the head lice comb.
Many people choose to wash the hair with a naturally medicated or insecticide comprised shampoo for head lice, and this can have a great effect in killing the lice, yet combing through with the comb is still essential.
There is a second type of nit comb that has become available of late, and this is the electric louse comb; it works by administering an electric shock that is too small to be felt by us yet fatal for the louse, and is powered by a standard battery. These affordable and effective devices may signal the way forward in treating head lice, as the creatures are reported to be developing immunity to certain insecticides used to treat them as a rule.

Before we go on it is important that we understand the reason why the head lice is so hard to remove using a conventional comb: a head louse will lay her eggs very close to the base of the hair, almost on the scalp, and lives on the scalp herself, hence a conventional comb will not reach the tiny creatures, and its teeth are likely to be too widely separated to do so, too.

A head lice comb is designed to be smaller yet deeper, and also to have very fine teeth and tiny gaps between them, thus enabling the user to remove both lice and nits – the troublesome and difficult to eradicate eggs of the lice – from the hair with greater success.

Affordable Head Lice Comb

A cheap and simple item, generally made from plastic and metal and available from many shops on the high street plus internet suppliers, using the comb regularly is a must if one is to b certain of eliminating lice. In fact, there is a routine to be followed that is based around the life cycle of the head louse. A female adult louse will live for thirty days, and lay each day a handful of eggs. The first step, then, is to use the nit comb to remove all living creatures – statistics have shown there are likely to be less the twenty adults on the head at one time – and as many eggs as possible. As we know the eggs hatch in a week, and newborns do not begin breeding for another week, we know that if we comb regularly all new lice that are removed will not be layers, and one week later the head should be completely clear.

Conventional Head Lice Comb

As in many walks of life, however, technology has seen an advance on the conventional head lice comb, and it is now possible to buy electronic versions that, using a standard battery and a very small charge, electrocute the lice as they find them. This method is favoured by many as it has proved efficient and simple to use in a number of trials, yet many people still prefer to refer to the older and less technologically advanced nit comb.

Whatever route is chosen it is vital to remember that a nit comb should be used in conjunction with other methods, including washing the hair with special shampoos, as this is the best way to make sure that homemade remedies for head lice are successful.

Ringworm, Athlete’s Foot, contagious rashes can all be contracted if you come into direct contact with someone who is infected. Touching contaminated items can also spread the infection. Direct skin contact also raises the chances of Ringworm or other contagious skin infections. Humans are far more likely to contract Athlete’s Foot or Ringworm from places like a school, playground, gym, or shower facilities. Tinea corporis in medical terms, but Ringworm to most people, is the name used for minor skin afflictions of the trunk, legs or arms of a dermatophyte fungus. Dermatophytes are a group of related fungi that infect and live on the top layer of the epidermis. Ringworm in the feet is a skin infection is called Athlete’s Foot and caused by this fungus that can affect the scalp, skin, fingers, toenails or feet.

The term Ringworm refers to round or oval red scaly patches that appear on the skin. They are often seen to be less red and scaly in the middle or can even look healed at the center. It is typical for one ring to develop inside another preexisting ring. Acute Ringworm, Athlete’s Foot infections show up as itchy inflamed red patches that may be pustular. Chronic Ringworm is more likely to be found in sweaty body folds. Severe cases of Ringworm, Athlete’s Foot, contagious rashes and the like all have a tendency to be hard to treat and have a likely-hood of recurrence. There are non-fungal conditions that look a lot like Ringworm, Athlete’s Foot and other contagious rashes. They include impetigo, Seborrhoeic dermatitis, Psoriasis, Discoid eczema, Lichen simplex, Contact allergic dermatitis and Pityriasis rosea.

Ringworm Athletes Foot Symptoms

Athlete’s Foot symptoms may appear suddenly and then spread rapidly. In chronic cases there is a slow growing area of a relatively mild, minimally inflamed, rash. It will more than likely affect exposed areas and it is not uncommon that it could also spread from other infected areas. Athlete’s Foot is most often treated with antifungal drugs topically applied. Topical therapy is adequate in most patients with Ringworm, Athlete’s Foot or other contagious rashes. It is normal for creams containing anti-fungal agents to work by hindering the fungi from producing a substance called ergosterol. This is a necessary part of fungal cell membranes. If ergosterol synthesis is completely or partially blocked, an intact cell membrane can no longer be produced. This effectively kills the fungus. Keeping feet clean and dry, not sharing socks or contaminated articles and wearing shower shoes goes a long way to keeping Ringworm, Athlete’s Foot contagious as it is from spreading.

Most newborns and toddlers end up with some type of baby rash. This can be anything from baby acne, heat rash, diaper rash, cradle cap, prickly heat or miliaria crystalline. Chicken pox and eczema are also common childhood afflictions. Most of these rashes are harmless and go away on their own.

Cradle cap, a common rash on a baby’s head, is usually easy to recognize, with symptoms that can include a scalp rash that is dry and flaky. It also appears as thick, greasy, yellow or brown scales. Other symptoms is it has red patches with crust and is sometimes itchy.

Treatment For Baby Rashes

For mild cradle cap, time is often the best treatment, as many children get better on their own.

If the baby has red skin around the diaper area, diaper rash is most likely the culprit. Most diaper rashes occur because of skin irritation due to diapers that are too tight; wet diapers left on for too long; or a particular brand of detergent, diapers, or baby wipes. Avoid it by keeping the diaper area open to the air as long as possible, changing your baby’s diaper as soon as it’s wet, washing with a warm cloth, and applying zinc oxide cream.

Baby acne gets its start in the womb, where baby is exposed to mom’s hormones. Those hormones increase oil production which in turn clogs baby’s oil glands. Pimples on baby’s nose and cheeks usually clear up by themselves in a few weeks. So you don’t need to treat baby acne or use lotion. If your child starts to get blisters on the body or face or limbs that then crust as new blisters appear, this is probably chicken pox.

Common Baby Rashes

Although having a heat rash is common in infants, it is likely not as common as many parents believe, who tend to call any red rash their baby has when it is hot outside a heat rash. As the name tends to imply, heat rash is triggered in certain children when they become overheated, either because they are overdressed or because it is simply too hot outside.

When comparing baby rashes pictures are a good way to identify which rash is which. Most baby rashes pictures will also include detailed descriptions that can be helpful in identifying the type of rash affecting your infant. It is common for some rashes to be confused with others. In the event there is still some doubt as to what you are dealing with it is a good idea to contact your doctor.

Ovide head Lice Treatment

Where head lice are concerned there are several different methods of treating them (head lice), among these being the very odd methods of smothering the head lice with substances that are found in the average kitchen through washing the hair regularly in a natural herbal shampoo, right down the basic and essential practice of combing the hair with a special head lice comb, something that should be carried out in conjunction with any other chosen method for head lice treatment.
However, despite the availability of prescription insecticide shampoos, designed to kill the creatures and reportedly very effective, many people are wary of using these items, and choose not to do so. They fear the consequences of smothering their child’s head in what is effectively a poison, and of the apparent possible side effects these substances can have.

What is Ovide head Lice Treatment?

Ovide head lice treatment is one of these popular prescription only lotions, so let’s have a closer look at what it is, what it does, and whether or not there is anything to be concerned about.
The first thing to understand is the Ovide is a trade mark, a brand name for a particular head lice treatment, and it contains an insecticide called Malathion. Malathion is present in only minute quantities in the product – one half of a percent, in fact – yet this is said to be enough to kill the head lice while being harmless to the patient. However, it is not for use on those under six years of age, and does come with some possible side effects.

Side effects are minor, and include an increase in dandruff and irritation to the scalp; furthermore, the substance can be dangerous to the eyes, and as Ovide used for head lice treatment is an alcohol based product it is flammable.
The plus side is that it is thoroughly tested and is safe when used in conjunction with the directions given, and as it is available only on prescription cannot be given for anything other than serious head lice infestations.

Insecticides for head Lice

There are many reports that some insecticides have become useless as the head lice have developed immunity to them, although this is not a reported problem with Malathion based lotions such as Ovide. It remains popular and widely prescribed, and is certified safe.

The choice as to whether to use an insecticide for head lice or a natural product remains with the individual, with the advantages of scientific testing and known success being for the former, and the knowledge of complete safety for the latter; it’s a choice only you can make.

Tinea corporis is ringworm of body parts other than scalp, face, and feet. Skin infections like ringworm can be treated with antifungal creams or ointments. Applying antifungal creams like Lamisil or tolnaftate for around two weeks treats such ringworm infections. Tolnaftate is a popular ingredient in over the counter topical anti-fungal creams. Tolnaftate is used to treat skin infections such as athlete’s foot, jock itch, and ringworm. It is an antifungal that works by preventing the growth of fungus. Continue to use this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after starting the treatment. Discontinuing the medication too early may allow the fungus to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection. Pets should also be treated if infection is suspected. Many of these products are available without a prescription. Use a nonprescription antifungal cream with miconazole or clotrimazole in it. Brand names include Micatin, Tinactin, Monistat, and Lotrimin. Terbinafine cream or Lamisil is also available without a prescription.

Tinea Pedis or athlete’s foot as it is known to most, is common in males and athletes. This appears as white and moist skin between toes. Although creams offer relief for the infection, you can take oral products for effective treatment for severe cases of ringworm skin infections. Treating ringworm is a must because not only is it extremely contagious but ringworm infection can lead to chronic problems and diseases. Dermatophytes live on dead tissues of nail, hair, and skin. This fungus causes ringworm skin infection although there are many other ringworm causing fungi. Treating the fungal infection may be a long drawn out procedure, as different types of ringworm infections need different treatments. Tinea Unguium is ringworm infection that attacks the nails and leads to a thickening and discoloration of the toenails. There are several effective treatments for such ringworm infections. Severe cases of infections in nails need oral treatments. With a product containing tolnaftate like antifungal Lamisil cream ringworm will be treated and faster relief will be achieved.

When taking precautions to avoid ringworm type infections stay away from the following, direct skin-to-skin contact with a human infected with ringworm or contact with an animal infected with ringworm. The infection is carried by many animals including dogs, cats, rabbits and even horses, pigs, and goats. Sharing another person’s towel or bedding could spread the infection that causes ringworm. Even playing in the dirt, though rare, has been thought to cause ringworm infection.

Treating head lice involves understanding how these annoying yet strangely fascinating little creatures go about their lives, and part and parcel of that is reading into the interesting quirks of the head lice life cycle.

First, it is important to know a couple of things that people often overlook: the first is that it is entirely possible for a patient to have the head lice eggs – otherwise known as nits – but for the head lice to have departed, and second is that you do not need to be someone with perennially dirty hair to suffer from a head lice infestation as they will inhabit anyone’s head!

Starting with the female adult head lice, she lives for as many as thirty days, feeding off our blood and scuttling around our scalp and hair. She cannot fly – no head lice can – and moves by walking from hair to hair, this being the reason why they spread quickly among children who enjoy unhindered physical contact with each other, and she lays up to eight eggs a day.

A quick calculation gives us in excess of 200 eggs over her lifetime, and each one of those head lice eggs is laid at the base of a hair follicle, and attached to the hair by a very strong adhesive that comes with it. The nits remain as such for a week, and when hatched they take another week to reach maturity, all this time feeding off the blood to reach the required size – about the size of a pinhead.

More About Head Lice Cycle

Once at adult status, they begin the cycle again, the females laying every day to add to the population of breeding lice. This continued cycle explains why much in the world of head lice treatment involves repeated routines over a period of weeks; it is possible to remove all the adult females in one wet combing session, yet be left with a series of eggs that may hatch in anywhere between one and seven days. This means that regular inspection is necessary in order to make sure the new head lice do not reach breeding age and begin to create yet more nits.

Understanding this head lice cycle is key to successful head lice treatment, and with the many information sites that abound on the internet it is even possible to look at some very detailed head lice pictures in order to be able to recognize the creatures, and being able to recognize and correctly identify the presence of head lice is one way of making sure that an infestation does not get out of control.
