Is Having Head Lice A Problem?

The head lice is an ever present problem across the world, and one that has been with us for millions of years; scientists have discovered that even stone age man would have been prone to these irritating little creatures/head lice, and with the benefit of the digital age we are able to examine them in full detail via many websites that carry extremely impressive, and very interesting, pictures of them.
One thing that is helpful when looking to treat a head lice infestation is to understand the life cycle of these miniscule creatures, and it is quite a fascinating one that takes in three stages: the nit, or egg, the head lice nymphs and the adult head lice themselves.

Head Lice Nymphs for Head Lice Treatments

Looking at the sequence it is easy to overlook the importance of the nymphs stage of head lice in terms of treatment, as this very brief period can be crucial to successfully treating the problem. Given that the nit remains as such for around one week, and then hatches as a head lice nymph, and that nits are particularly difficult to find and remove it is essential that we understand how long we have between the emergence of the nymph and its development into a fully grown breeding nymph.
In fact, the period is as little as one week, with two weeks being the most, and it is in this period that the patient needs to keep a very careful look out for newly hatched nymphs, and to repeat any treatment routine that may have been used in the first place.

More About Head Lice Nymphs

Nits are difficult to remove as they are absolutely minute, and also they are stuck to our hair by a type of adhesive making them very difficult to dislodge, so many people – having safely cleared the head of adult lice – opt to wait for the emergence of the nymph, and to catch it before it reaches breeding age. Nymphs may be tiny, too, but they are big enough to be caught by a nit comb, or electrocuted by one of the newer devices before they can breed, while not even the most powerful Permethrin or Malathion head lice lotions can guarantee to kill every nit that exists.
The knowledge we have gained from careful observation and available information means that head lice have become easier to deal with; natural and prescription head lice treatments are more widely available than ever before, and we are more understanding of what is needed in order to treat head lice at source.

Tinea Corporis Tinea Cruris

What is Tinea Corporis Tinea Cruris?

Tinea is the fungus that causes ringworm, jock itch and athlete’s foot or in medical terms tinea corporis, tinea cruris and tinea pedis respectively. These infections are typically not serious, but they can be extremely uncomfortable. They can be contracted by touching or contact with an infected person, from damp surfaces such as shower floors, or even from a pet.

Tinea Corporis Tinea CrurisTinea corporis, is the name given to a fungus infection of the skin also called “ringworm of the body,” and often affects children and adults who live in hot, humid climates. The typical appearance of this infection is a circular plaque with a well outlined border. Since tinea corporis can be asymptomatic, it can spread rapidly among children and in day-care and school settings.  It may be spread from person to person, from contact with an infected animal, most often a cat, or from exposure to fungus in the soil. Itchy red scaly patches come up anywhere the animal has rubbed. They often develop into a ring. This kind of tinea usually clears up with appropriate creams.  If the condition was transferred by an animal, even if it has no signs of a skin problem the animal will need to be treated also.

Tinea Corporis Tinea Cruris Definition

Tinea cruris is usually referred to as “jock itch,” because as this condition implies, it causes itching or a burning sensation in areas of the groin, thigh skin folds, or anus.  It may involve the inner thighs and genital areas. Unlike yeast infections, tinea cruris generally does not involve the scrotum or the penis.  It is very common and affects men more often than women and rarely affects children.

Tinea Corporis Tinea Cruris Facts

The itchy red patches will spread in the warm moist areas of the body. Variations of red, tan, or brown coloration may appear in the infected areas.  Flaking, rippling, peeling, or cracking skin will also be present. Tinea cruris is often treated with antifungal drugs topically applied. Topical therapy is adequate in most patients with tinea cruris.  Oral therapy is the preferred treatment in cases where the infection spreads to the lower thighs or buttocks,. Customarily creams containing anti-fungal agents work by deterring the fungi from producing a substance called ergosterol, which is a necessary part of fungal cell membranes. If ergosterol synthesis is completely or partially blocked, the cell is no longer able to produce an intact cell membrane. This effectively kills the fungus.

Head Lice Pictures

Head Lice Pictures – Essential and Amazing

The identification of head lice has been enhanced in terms of ease of late by the ability to take photographs of these miniature creatures using advanced photographic technology. Using a microscope attachment enables the photographer to get a much magnified picture of the louse, one that shows incredible detail and makes recognizing lice much easier.

Pick up any antiquated scientific journal or book covering the subject, however, and you will still see head lice pictures, often very intricate and highly detailed colored plates that are, in fact, quite beautiful and clearly have taken much time to create. How these were done is a question often asked.

Head LiceA talented artist would be needed to create such images, and he or she would be using a microscope or magnifying glass to look at the creature; consider how much time and effort was needed to create such an image back then – a hundred years ago or more – and how easy it is to take a photograph and manipulate it to our requirements using affordable everyday computer systems, and the difference in dedication becomes clear.

Furthermore, modern printing techniques have enabled the production of high resolution images, with detail far beyond that that could have been imagined by our artist of old.

Technology has clearly played a great part in allowing us to produce images that show such intricacies as the head lice life cycle, and in terms of diagnosis such material is essential to us now; head lice prevention can be very much aided by understanding what the creatures look like and how the evolve, hence a series of photographs showing the evolution of the head lice, from nit to adult, can be of great interest to a sufferer or one who suspects an outbreak.

Advances in technology in the photographic world have opened our eyes to a mass of miniature things and creatures that were previously unseen; consider that an adult head louse is no bigger than a pin head, and you see the immediate benefit of being able to photograph such creatures and enlarge the image, without loss of detail, on a computer. Furthermore, advances in video technology have allowed us to film lice on the move, something that has taught us a great deal about how they spread.

Having lice pictures available is something that the medical profession has found very useful indeed, and while we can only marvel at the wonderful pictures drawn by scholars of old, we must not forget the skill involved in photographing tiny creatures.
